Hiking the John Muir Trail at Garnet Lake was the best path. The John Muir Trail continues onto Thousand Island Lake, but we didn't have the time nor the energy to make it that far, so we settled for Garnet Lake instead. Garnet Lake is just as beautiful as Thousand Island Lake but not as popular. We found a campsite with our very own beachfront view. That evening we were finishing up cooking dinner and out of nowhere the clouds lite up over Banner Peak, creating an amazing cotton candy sunset. The good news was I did have to go very far to grab my tripod and take some photographs since this was taken right near our campsite. The clouds made for a great reflection on the clear waters of Garnet Lake. But views like these make the 18-mile backpacking trip and two thousand feet elevation gain worth it.
