After a full day of shooting in Banff, we were tired and ready to call it quits. But as we drove past the Vermilion Lakes, the sky looked promising for a moonrise. Most people would have gone back to the hotel, yet something told us to turn around and give it one more try.
We returned to the third lake where small open pools remained unfrozen. The moon was already high when we arrived, bathing the snowy landscape and iconic Mount Rundle in cool, ethereal light. I spotted a beautiful curve in the snow and ice that created a strong leading line toward the mountain. Setting up quickly, I used a longer exposure to gently blur the drifting clouds while the ice crystals sparkled under the moonlight.
