Columbia Hills Wildflowers

Columbia Hills wildflowers burst into color every spring, creating one of the Pacific Northwest's most breathtaking floral displays.

Thinking back to that first visit still gives me goosebumps. I pulled up to Columbia Hills and the hillsides were alive with color. Arrowleaf balsamroot glowed bright yellow, mixed with deep purple lupine stretching as far as the eye could see, all bathed in warm golden hour light against soft green rolling hills. It was unreal, like God had grown the perfect wildflower bouquet just for that afternoon.

I grabbed my tripod and raced from spot to spot, chasing the golden hour. From the road the hills might seem ordinary, but hiking the trails reveals wave after wave of blooms. Every rise reveals new layers of color, making the scene feel like a living painting. One of those magical Pacific Northwest spring days when everything clicks and your heart can barely keep up.

Columbia Hills wildflowers peak late April through early May, though some years start as early as late March. Missing it could mean waiting another year for that perfect bloom. This photograph captures an unforgettable golden-hour moment, bringing the vibrant wildflowers from Columbia Hills straight into your space.

Columbia Hills & Dalles Mountain Ranch Wildflower Current Conditions - April 2026

Arrowleaf balsamroot and lupine are blooming strongly across the rolling hills of Columbia Hills and Dalles Mountain Ranch. Golden-yellow balsamroot carpets the slopes, mixed with vibrant purple lupine in full display during golden hour. The bloom is excellent this year thanks to mild winter conditions and is currently at or near peak in early April.

Updates: Washington State Parks and recent visitor reports (April 1-4, 2026). Peak season typically runs late March through April-May.

Season & Best Viewing

Late March through May, with the best golden-hour displays in April. Hike the Dalles Mountain Ranch trails for sweeping views of balsamroot and lupine against the Columbia River and Mount Hood.

2026 Bloom Factors

Mild winter brought blooms a bit earlier; perfect rainfall and temperatures created strong displays of arrowleaf balsamroot and lupine. These ephemeral Pacific Northwest wildflowers are at their most spectacular right now. View one of my favorite Columbia Hills sunrise shots
