Anza Borrego State Park Sunrise

Spectacular sunrise with cholla cactus in California's desert wilderness

Few sunrises in the Southwest are as striking as in Anza Borrego State Park. Before the sun rises, the desert is calm and still. Shadows stretch across badlands, washes, and hills as the sky begins to brighten.

In the park's famous cholla cactus garden, I was searching for the perfect composition when I felt a prick in my arm. A piece of cholla cactus had stuck in my jacket. Anza Borrego is known for its many varieties of cholla, and I quickly realized I couldn't just use my hands to remove it. With a couple of rocks and a buddy's help, it came free, and I was finally ready to capture the sunrise among the glowing desert and golden cacti.

When the sun hits the horizon, warm light illuminates sandy ridges, washes, and cholla, revealing shades of gold, rust, and lavender. This blend of light, texture, and desert silhouettes is exactly what draws photographers, adventurers, and lovers of the Southwest to Anza Borrego sunrise photography again and again.

This photograph captures that fleeting moment when the desert awakens. Displayed as a fine art print, it brings the quiet warmth and spiny beauty of an Anza Borrego sunrise into your space, letting you return to that feeling again and again.
