Imagine standing on the cliffs at Point Dume as the sun begins to sink toward the Pacific, the air cool and salty, with waves rolling in below. In front of you, a bocquet of blooming yellow coreopsis catching the sunset light, the clouds lightning up in a glorious sunset, glowing in the Pacific ocean with the rugged Malibu coastline. It is the kind of moment that makes you feel alive.
Malibu sunsets are among the most striking in Southern California. Where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, the coastline along Pacific Coast Highway opens up to dramatic views and ever-changing light. On this particular evening, I headed back to Point Dume after hearing the wildflowers were blooming. When I arrived, the hillside along the cliffs was covered in yellow coreopsis, creating a vibrant foreground against the coastline below.
As the sun began to set, the sky came alive with deep oranges, soft pinks and golden light stretching across the horizon. I moved quickly along the edge of the cliff to find the perfect composition that balanced the flowers in the foreground with the sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean. While photographing as the waves rolling into the cove, I noticed a humpback whale surfacing offshore, adding an unexpected and unforgettable moment to the scene.
Moments like this feel serendipitous. Along the Malibu coastline, it takes the right combination of spring blooms, coastal weather, sunset light and timing for everything to come together. Most sunsets pass quietly, but every so often, the conditions align in a way that feels extraordinary. This photograph captures that moment at Point Dume, when the cliffs, wildflowers, and sunset light aligned. Bring that feeling into your space. Let the color, movement, and atmosphere of the Pacific Coast transform your wall into a window to Malibu.
