Maligne Lake is widely regarded as one of the most scenic lakes in the Canadian Rockies. After setting up camp, we kayaked across the chilly, intermittently snowy waters toward Spirit Island. As we rounded the bend, the clouds began to part, revealing the legendary grove of spruce trees perfectly framed by the surreal milky cerulean water and dramatic peaks.
We beached the kayaks and stood in silent awe as the sunset light danced across the mountainss lasting until blue hour. The grandeur scene is every bit as magical in person as the famous photographs suggest. Eight miles of paddling was more than worth it for this view of a lifetime.
